چکیده

The angle between the rotation and orbital axes of stars in binary systems -- obliquity is an important indicator how these form evolve but few such measurements exist. We combine sample astrometric inclinations from Gaia DR3 with a solar-like oscillators which rotational have been measured using asteroseismology. supplement our one whose visual orbit has determined speckle interferometry present projected spin-orbit alignments five systems. find that each system, overall sample, consistent alignment there are caveats. First, asteroseismic fundamentally ambiguous and, second, we can only measure (rather than true) obliquity. If independent isotropically-distributed, however, likelihood drawing data by chance less per cent. Though small, set argues against uniformly random obliquities speculate dozens more could be made NASA's TESS mission, mostly red giants. ESA's PLATO mission will likely produce hundreds main-sequence subgiant stars.

Whole Genome Alignments Based On Local Alignments

Given the genomes (DNA) of two related species, one of the whole genome alignment tasks is to locate regions on the genomes that possibly contain genes conserved over the two species. Most of the existing whole genome alignment software tools, MUMmer (Delcher et al., 2002; Kurtz et al., 2004), MaxMincluster (Wong et al., 2004), and MSS (Chan et al., 2004), generate Maximal Unique Matches (MUMs)...

PROJECTED DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS AND OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS

We establish a relationship between general constrained pseudoconvex optimization problems and globally projected dynamical systems. A corresponding novel neural network model, which is globally convergent and stable in the sense of Lyapunov, is proposed. Both theoretical and numerical approaches are considered. Numerical simulations for three constrained nonlinear optimization problems a...

Aligning Alignments

While the area of sequence comparison has a rich collection of results on the alignment of two sequences, and even the alignment of multiple sequences, there is little known about the alignment of two alignments. The problem becomes interesting when the alignment objective function counts gaps, as is common when aligning biological sequences, and has the form of the sum-of-pairs objective. We b...

What Characters Know: Projected Knowledge and Projected Co-Presence

What inferences do readers make about “who knows what” in narrative worlds? We introduce the concepts of projected knowledge and projected co-presence to describe circumstances in which readers infer that characters possess information presented, for example, only in narration. Our experiments examine one type of evidence readers use to project knowledge. In Experiment 1, readers used character...

Arguing Over Ontology Alignments

In open and dynamic environments, agents will usually differ in the domain ontologies they commit to and their perception of the world. The availability of Alignment Services, that are able to provide correspondences between two ontologies, is only a partial solution to achieving interoperability between agents, because any given candidate set of alignments is only suitable in certain contexts....
